Wa West District is one of the eleven administrative districts of the Upper West Region of Ghana. It is located in the North Western part of the region and stretches from longitudes 40\u00b0N to 245\u00b0 and from latitudes 9\u2033W to 32\u00b0W, covering\n an area of approximately 5,899.3 square kilometers. To the South, North-West and East, it has a common boundary with the Northern Region, Nadowli District and Wa Municipal respectively, and to the West with Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n
The district lies within the general prevailing semi savanna vegetation and tropical climatic conditions in the region. The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary (WCHS) is a unique community-based project, protecting and preserving the wildlife and the environment of a 40km stretch of the Black Volta River in Ghana\u2019s Upper West Region. The river is home to one of the two remaining hippopotamus populations in Ghana, and was created into a Sanctuary by local chiefs in 1999.
